List five songs that you are currently digging - it doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words,
or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions and the five songs (with artist) in your blog. Then tag five people to see what they're listening to.By the way, go check out Eula's
pic posts. She's so pretty, and there's this dude in a lot of the pics. Some guy named Neil Gaiman something-or-the-other, I dunno.
On to the music!
1.
Super Furry Animals - Zoom! (6.31 MB, 128kbps)
The ebulliently titled song is the first track off Super Furry Animals' new album,
Love Kraft. The album starts with a splash, literally, made by guitarist Huw 'Bunf' Bunford as he dives into a swimming pool. The baptismal opening admits the listeners to a surreal world where dalmation spots become hairy moth-lion creatures that feed on blemishes, the Virgin Mary goes to see an eye doctor for an eye affliction (she weeps floods of blood) and ends up at the family planning clinic, where the steed of a missing English
earl is a kidnapped
racehorse. The lush strings and choir (which turns out to be
not a 100 member Catalan choir but 12 Welsh students) give the song an anthemic quality
2.
Phoenix - If I Ever Feel Better (5.08MB, 160kbps)
From the French pop group, Phoenix's debut album
United,
If I Ever Feel Better is a bright, breezy and catchy pop song about
despair. The pulsing dance beats belies the melancholy lyrics, so that one doesn't quite know whether to wallow or boogie.
3.
Arcade Fire - Headlights Look Like Diamonds (10.13MB, 320kbps)
An exuberant, almost giddy, song from the
Arcade Fire EP. Régine's quivering, sometimes almost out of key vocals imbue the song with a delicate poignancy.
4.
Bobby Valentino - Slow Down (8.84MB, 320 kbps)
Harp: Glissando, glissando. I hope I can class this track up.
Bobby Valentino: Booty, booty, booty. God the
lyrics are stupid. "I was blown away by your sexiness", "Bless me with your beauty, cutie". Seriously?! Good thing my crooning is SMOOTH.
Slow Down's melody: Damn, I'm catchy! Big ups to instrumentation. Couldn't have done it without you.
Me: (shamefacedly) You had me at glissando.
5.
Mitch Benn and the Distractions - Everything Sounds Like Coldplay Now (7.99MB, 320kbps)
The parody by UK comedian Mitch Benn was first broadcast on his BBC Radio 4 show,
Mitch Benn's Crimes Against Music. I loves me some Coldplay, but this song is hilarious. I lost my shit when Mitch Benn's voice leapfrogged to a falsetto, as is Chris Martin's wont. The song is funny because it's true. As Benn warbles--his Martinian vocals floating above the mournful piano, "This could be Embrace, Keane or Snow Patrol/Thirteen Senses sound like this as well, I'm told/It could be anyone/It's so hard to say/Maybe this is actually Coldplay".
[Songs uploaded to YSI. A zip file of all 5 songs can be downloaded
here (34.8MB).]
I pass this meme baton to anyone who feels like doing it.
Checked out
Five songs either in my car ('s tape deck) or my head:
1.) Various snatches of the Batman Begins soundtrack. Dude, I'm so addicted it's not funny.
2.) "Sing, Sing, Sing" as performed by Lee Press-On and the Nails.
3.) "Mambo Swing" by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
4.) "The Vampire Hunters" from Coppola's Dracula soundtrack.
5.) "Rag Doll" by Aerosmith.
6.) What the hell, I'll throw in a freebie: "Bad to the Bone" by George Thorogood and the Destroyers. I believe that's a John Lee Hooker cover but I'm too ass-lazy to go look it up.
